What I'm Learning in School - Second Grade

I am learning all sorts of things in school.  I have twelve subjects!  Second grade takes way longer than first grade does.  I'm having a lot of fun.

I do history on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  On Tuesday, I listen to a story while I read the book, and then I have to answer questions about what happened in the story.  On Thursdays, I do an activity that has to do with the chapter.  History is not one of my favorite subjects.

Anna teaches me geography once a week, on Wednesdays.  We learn about maps and how to read them.  I like geography because I like maps.

For second grade math, I'm learning multiplication.  So far, I've learned the 0 facts, the 1 facts, and the 2 facts.  I like multiplication.  Math is easy.

When I do poetry, I learn a poem every week.  If it's a super-long one, I have two weeks.  Mom records it on her phone as a voice memo on Mondays.  She sends it to my iPhone (note from Laurel: it's not a working phone, but rather an old iPhone that we use as an iPod.) and I listen to it.  Every day I practice reciting it, but on Friday I have to recite for Daddy.  So far this year, I've learned "Mouse" by Mary Ann Hoberman, "Peter Piper," and "The Termite" by Ogden Nash.  I like poetry a lot.

We use First Language Lessons for grammar.  I'm learning about nouns and verbs right now.  I'm not looking forward to grammar as much as I am other subjects.

For spelling, I am in the Americana level of Spelling You See.  That means that every day, I have a paragraph that I have to read and find consonant chunks or vowel chunks.  Afterwards, I copy part of the paragraph.  Mom says this is handwriting class as well.  I like doing the writing part.

Science is fun, but not my favorite subject.  Right now, I'm learning about inclined planes and levers. This morning, I lifted Daddy with a lever.

I do my religion on the computer.  I go to a website called mycatholicfaithdelivered.com, and I do a chapter of Faith and Life online.  I have to do quizzes, learn definitions, and play games.  If I do a great job on the first quiz, I get to skip part of the lesson.  I love to do stuff on the computer, and because it's praying, it's fun.

Every day, I do typing.  I do Mavis Beacon for fifteen minutes.  I always do a lesson and a game.  The best I've gotten was 100% accuracy with 11 words per minute.  I look forward to typing every day that I do it.

This year, we're trying something new for foreign language.  We're doing something called Mango Languages.  It's a website where I learn a little bit of different languages every week.  So far, I've tried French and German.  Next week, I get to try Japanese.  Other languages I want to try are Pirate, Hawaiian, and Irish.  I like Mango.

For art, I'm doing Catholic Heritage Curricula's Art Pac 2.  I'm doing one lesson every Tuesday.  I get to do things like make a crayon box out of paper.  I love art so far.

Blogging is my top favorite.  I am doing it right now.  I do Ella in the Kitchen on Tuesdays and I do a blog post on Thursdays.  I like doing the typing part.

  2. You spelled "dope" wrong. Correct usage is "History is dope, multiplication is dope, religion is dope, art is dope, and blogging is dope."
